The need for energy in our developing world is increasing day by day. The life span of the energy sources used; Considering the increase in the world population, technological advances and the need for more energy consumption in the growing world population each year than before, it is a fact that energy sources will run out of life faster than expected. What is a smart meter and what kind of solution does it? Let's find answers to the question together.
Therefore, various energy saving ways are created to better evaluate our resources. Smart Meters are part of Smart Grids, helping the user consume electrical energy more efficiently.

What is a Smart Meter?
Electrical meters are an electric measuring instrument that allows us to see the amount of electrical energy we consume or use and shows us the amount of energy consumed directly in KWh or MWH. It is possible to allocate electricity meters to 3 analog, digital and prepaiten.
Smart meters are actually digital meters that have become widespread in recent times. As with analog utensils, they are produced as Single Phase and Three Phases. Smart meters, which we can describe as the most important link of smart networks, are fully user-oriented and are there to make the use of power grids more efficient.
What is a Smart Meter; Smart meters are electrical meters that can present values such as consumption, power quality, to the user's tracking by measuring electrical energy usually every 1 hour or less, i.e. by making real-time information. One reason these meters are called smart is because the precision class has been reduced.
Smart meters in Turkey have come up under the name of 'automatic meter reading system' (OSOS). This means that counters have remote information reporting. Smart meters have two main lys difference over the other number. The first is that the watch screen is electronic, and the most important thing is to keep in your memory how much electrical energy we spend at all hours of the day.
Differences between analog utensils and electronic counter[1]s;
- Analog utensils and electronic counters have a different measurement system. · There is no malfunction in electronic meters due to problems caused by mechanical parts. ·
- There is little risk of using leakage electricity as electronic meters keep records of klemens and body cover opening dates, times and customs. · Energy information can be monitored as retrospective consumption information is kept in electronic meters. ·
- It is possible to pay less against the same energy consumed by subscribing to the multi-tariff system on electronic meters.
TEDAS General Directorate
Officials of TEDAS General Directorate, Ministry of Energy and Natural Resources, Energy Affairs Survey Administration made some calculations as a result of their work in 2000 and accordingly the amount of use between 17:00 and 22:00 was 15% compared to the total usage. In 2003, this rate grew even further.
Considering that approximately 25-30% of the consumption belongs to the dingy, a maximum of 25% of the energy used in the dinguses is shifted out of the active area, saving more by disappearing on a time-by-hour level. Line losses from time-to-hour overload, etc., result in a 15% year-on-year shift in energy based on 2000 data, resulting in $1.5 billion.
[2]. As can be seen in the time interval, the demand for electric power consumption during business hours or evening hours is increasing. This causes the existing lines to be inadequate and losses to increase. It is planned to reduce loads that suddenly board the network with smart meters. Thus, the use of these meters will contribute to the economy of producers, consumers and countries.
Electricity Tariffs Applied on Smart Meters
The tariff applied on smart meters is divided into a 24-hour 3 time interval and each time interval is priced separately. On analog utensils, this is priced at a single rate.
Time intervals;
06:00-17:00 daytime schedule,
17:00-22:00 point schedule,
22:00-06:00 night timetable,
The unfunded tariff price imposed by Tedas since 1/10/2011;
Single-time 15,811 kr/kwh
Daytime rate 15,708 kr/kwh
Score tariff 28,029 kr/kwh
Night timetable 6,824 kr/kwh
The day timetable is about 1.5% cheaper than normal, the score rate is 50% cheaper and the night timetable is 50% cheaper. The main purpose of a metering in this way is to spread energy consumption equal to 24 hours and to raise awareness of electricity consumption. In addition, what is a Smart meter that minimizes errors caused by reading costs, corruption and human factor, are counters that can make it possible for businesses to monitor consumers online and control users. In this way, any amount of time will be reduced due to loss and escape.
In a simple experiment at home;
After switching from analog utensil to digital counter, a housewife made an experiment following time intervals. 55-60 tl from the old bill after the smart counter came to 44 tl, the price of the new meter attached to this amount of the first installment 13 tl was added. As you can see, the actual consumption cost is 31 liras.
In this study, high-power household appliances such as irons, ovens, dishwashers and dryers were operated after 22:00 and it was not possible to pay attention to these in the small household appliances that are frequently used. As the last experiment suggests, using the Smart meter on the watch is an important point for saving money.
In places where electricity consumption is high during daylight hours alone, single consistent tariff applications are required instead of this 3-way system. Otherwise, they will unwittingly face even more fluffy bills. In this case, they can apply to the distribution company with a petition to get out of the 3-way system and move to a single tariff.
Smart Meter Structure
Smart meters are no different from anologist counters in terms of circuit connection and function. The principle of operation is different only by their structure. They digitally detect information and transfer it to the LCD screen, and different from analog utensils; date, time, tariff information about the electrical energy consumed.
At the same time, because they have an in-erased memory unit, the receipt of historical information (information from the last 12 months) allows us to monitor it. Another feature is that the anologist monitors the operation of the meter on the counters from a rotating disk, while the new meters are monitored with the help of impulses suitable for today's technology.
Smart meters actually offer us consumption as 4 tariffs.
4. The tariff includes the weekend. However, this has not yet been implemented. These counters are invoicing at 00:00 on the first day of each month. Smart meters have the ability to constantly control their circuit. This allows the user to see it early when there is a problem.-They can operate at 95% deer between 400 C and +700C.
The life span of a counter is approximately 10 years, but it is useful for the consumer to constantly check the screen. Because unwitting battery life is depleted, the screen is frozen, or different failures can make the consumer financially victimized. They do summer/winter time automatically for 16 years. Despite the overcurrent, they have a fuse in themselves.
In other other ways, smart meters can cause power outages without overloading apartment insurance, which can cause damage to the meter. All information about the meter can also be accessed remotely by connecting directly to the computer or by connecting to the gsm network (osos). This, in addition to easing the burden of employees, is important in preventing the use of illegal electricity.
Are Smart Meters Enough for Cheap Electricity?
Although we emphasize that the meters are smart, the factor that will provide intelligent consumption here is human. Simply plugming in a smart meter doesn't mean cheap consumption. In to take advantage of this metered system after ingesting a smart meter, an application must be made to TEDAS with a petition.
Otherwise, the meter company charges the normal price, so even if the counter changes, the tariff applied to the invoice does not change. Smart meters should be considered cheap tariff between 22:00-06:00. In other other things, users should be informed about tariffs.
Otherwise, the consumer who is not aware of this will not pay attention to their consumption throughout the day and will encounter the invoice value that they do not expect.
